Report by Jan Draper
The extreme wind made conditions very tricky for our team at Kingston Heath on Monday the 22nd of July. Three matches were decided on the 18th but unfortunately, we lost to Peninsula Kingswood 3.5/1.5
Thanks to our caddies Julie Sheldrake, Margaret Willcox, Rob Draper, Hayley Peters and Denise Nachar for all their support.
Marilyn led the team out once again in blustery conditions. She played lovely golf, hardly missing a shot, to get off to a steady start. Squaring holes alternating with winning holes to turn 2 up. She proceeded to win a further three holes in easy fashion, leaving her opponent behind unable to get out of their massive bunkers on several holes, to be dormy five. Then a little shakiness crept in and her opponent claimed two holes, probably so we could play more of the course. But foot back on the pedal and Marilyn hit a par on the 16th to claim a victory 4/2. Well done on a terrific performance Marilyn!
Rhea had a difficult start but a great finish to the front nine and turned 2 down. Rhea had a great start to the back nine winning first three holes and halving 4 and 5 winning the 6th to go 2 up with 3 to go. Unfortunately, errors of judgement on 16 and 17 saw the match square. Too much wind on 18 saw Rhea find some trouble and lose of hole and match.
In very windy conditions Jan and her opponent took it in turns to find the treacherous bunkers in the first 9 with Jan turning 1 down with 4 wins and 5 losses. The 10th hole played saw their first halved hole which set the pattern for the second 9 with both players playing much better golf in a tense battle. Jan got the match back to square with a great par 5 on the 12th only to give 1 back on the par 3 15th after her opponent played an amazing shot out of a steep bunker, 2 more halved holes saw Jan made a six on the 18th to win the hole and halved the match. Good comeback.
As usual, Dot got off to fast start, quickly winning the first two holes and her caddy was dreaming of an early finish. Despite the blustery conditions, Dot was regularly finding the fairways and the greens.
When bunkers were found on the par 3’s Dot was able to extricate herself with great skill, managing to win one hole and save another. 2 up after 9, Dot was feeling pretty comfortable but her opponent hit her straps on the back 9 winning the first two holes before Dot steadied to take the next three. The match was Dot’s for the taking, 3 up with four holes to play. However, a miscalculated chip which found a bunker and a miss-timed 5 wood when her rival was in the bushes, saw the match all square heading up the last. Regrettably, Dot’s luck had run out and another trip into a greenside bunker enabled her opponent to grab a fortunate and unlikely 1up victory.
It was Sue’s first game today and she did start somewhat tentatively. However, as the match progressed she relaxed a little and showed her opponent some lovely shots off the tee, on the fairway followed up by some great putting. But her opponent played a very steady game and barely put a foot wrong which saw her triumph on the day. Given the very strong winds, both players had a lot to contend with. However, I am sure both enjoyed the opportunity to play such a great course as Kingston Heath.
