Report by Jan Draper- Team Manager
Foggy conditions almost cancelled play at Centenary Park on Monday. However, the fog lifted and the sun came out. The girls played well and came away with a 3/2 win. Well done girls and thanks to our caddies Marg Wilcox, Hayley Peters, Pam Doran, Denise Nachar and Jan Kreymborg who had a long day and were very supportive.
After a tricky start in the fog and a restart, Rhea Martin took the lead at the fourth hole gaining her first nett par. Unfortunately, the rest of that nine saw some tentative putting and Rhea turned one down. Rhea was driving well but her short game was not happening. Although it did not look positive the game was never out of reach. After 13 holes Rhea was getting annoyed with her game and was 2 down. We resolved to change the putting style and the approach shots and the game turned around. With more pressure on her opponent, Rhea managed two wins and two halves becoming square after 17. The last hole was a par 5 and Rhea was on for four her opponent finally missed a short putt and Rhea with nerves of steel sank her best putt of the day to win the hole and the match.
Following a fog delay, the second match involving Jan Draper and her Sandhurst opponent finally got underway from the 10th tee, 90 mins late. After a somewhat slow start in the heavy conditions, Jan made fine pars on her fourth and fifth holes for back to back wins, however, disaster was lurking just around the corner, when a wrong ball was played on the 16th (7th hole of the match). Caddy not happy! To her credit, Jan righted the ship immediately to turn all square after 9. When the sun broke through there was an immediate change of momentum as Jan’s putter warmed up with the weather and three consecutive holes were won, including on the par 3 when Jan was well out of position and had to chip to the green twice. Three holes later a fine up and down from the bunker (not that many at Centenary Park and Jan did well to find it), secured a 3/2 victory.
After the fog lifted, Anne Tolliday started out very positively, although parts of the course were difficult due to muddy patches. After nine Anne was one down and unfortunately after a great battle, she finished down 2/1.
Lois Barnett got off to a great start winning the first two holes with steady play, despite the fact that a bit of guesswork was needed to determine where exactly the greens were. Once the fog lifted Lois’ opponent found her game. She was a strong and accurate hitter of the ball but Lois kept pace with her and the scores were very close due to straight hits from Lois on the fairway and some great shots onto the green. Unfortunately, Lois missed a couple of putts around the middle of the game and that was really the only difference between the two players. The game went to the 17th hole which was squared leaving Sandhurst 2 up with one play. It was a great game to watch and Lois played so well and should be very proud of her efforts.
Playing her first Interclub match for Spring Valley, Ann Zhu started well winning the first hole with a par, showing her opponent that she needed to be on her game. Her opponent then stepped up, leaving Ann on the turn 2 down, but this only made Ann more determined on the back nine, with her drives now hitting the fairway and chipping and putting which left her opponent with nothing she could do but admire her great fight back, winning 1 up on the 18th hole.
