The men had an emphatic 6-1 win over Eastwood.
Round 3 was Vs Eastwood @ Keysborough. With all the Valley’s teams playing at the one venue you could smell the sense of Valley pride in the air. With two wins in the bag and the big in, Ruben Lal at number one (oh and Arthur Tan at 2nd emergency), expectations were high.
At #7 was Rob Loft (Lofty). Lofty’s caddy had a prior engagement so I was lucky enough to get the job looping. Lofty played great golf over the first 7 holes but his opponent holed not one, not two but three massive bombs to go 2 up. Well, then it was showtime. Lofty put on a display over the next 10 holes, just birdies and pars. 3 under in total he closed out his previously undefeated opponent 2/1
Spring Valley 1 Eastwood 0
At #6 was Lou Skantzos with Anthony Kelly back on the bag. Lou has been doing it easy so far this season, so I got quite a shock when I turned to ask how he was going. 3 fingers pointing to the ground. 3 dn after 8!! Lou’s opponent was a dead ringer for Sergio Garcia and let’s just say the Spanish matador felt the full force of Lou “The Bull” Skantzos over the next 10 holes as Lou turned around the deficit. His display of bunker and “divine 9” wood play had to be seen to be believed. A 2up win. Lou, you’re on fire! We hope they give you an easy week at work this week 😉
Spring Valley 2 Eastwood 0
At #5 was Craig Dyer. With the skip away, Craig engaged caddy Richard Scott, a previously undefeated combination. As you may recall, Craig did have the shanks last week, and had been seen at practice setting up to the ball with the toe of his club. Well either the change in caddy or change to setup worked, Craig comfortably defeated his younger opponent 4/3. The big question is…Will the skip be back on the bag next week?
Spring Valley 3 Eastwood 0
At #4 was Lee Collinson with 2nd Emergency Arthur Tan on the bag. After 2 losses in the first two games and the pressure on, Lee did what any great golfer does to find form…..change putter!!! Well it worked and he careered away for an easy(ish) 4 and 2 win. Well done Lee, great to have you back in the winner’s stall!
Spring Valley 4 Eastwood 0
At #3 was undefeated Adrian Barandowski (Barra) with Co-Manager Grolla back on the bag. Just like the first two matches Barra had the match under control in the early stages with some solid shot making. But then it went pear shaped and when we picked him up on the 17th Tee he was 2dn with 2 to play. You could see the frustration in his face but he was not giving up. A win on 17 and back to one dn. His tee shot on 18 went left into the trees and his opponents was a long way right. Decision time, go for it or play safe. By that stage he had 14 Caddies chanting GO FOR IT….GO FOR IT. Barra gave it a go but his ball bounced backwards off tree. A narrow loss for Barra this week but we all know it’s just a blip on the radar.
Spring Valley 4 Eastwood 1
At #2 was Scott Hooper with super caddy (player) Craig Hilton on the bag. When we approached Craig to ask how Scott was going the response was “I never seen him hit it better”. Enough said, Scott cruised to victory 5/4. He’s opponent was a golfer in shock at the after match. Just shook his head and called Scott some nice bad words!
Spring Valley 5 Eastwood 1
At #1 was our big in and boyfriend of Spring Valley’s own Elissa Orrsumgolf, Ruben Lal. We bumped into Eastwood’s scout after 3 holes and asked how the #1 match was travelling. He just shook his head, he’s man was 3 dn. We asked how Ruben was playing? The response..”I think he’s 4 under after 3”. Well the story didn’t get any rosier for Eastwood’s #1. Ruben spanked him 7/6. Orrsum effort Ruben 😉
Spring Valley wins 6/1 and moves to top position on the ladder.
Let’s get behind the boys and get as many members, family and friends to Kooringal on the 24th March for round 4.
Thanks again to all the caddies and supporters.

Report by Dean Phelan
Round 3 of pennant saw all three sides head to Keysborough this week and with the opportunity of seeing not just the ladies team, but also the colts and the men, we had a great bunch of supporters turn up to see the action.
The ladies were up against Woodlands this week and we were after revenge after the absolute towelling they gave us last year. Team manager Jan Kreymborg had a steely resolve about her and she was desperate for the team to back up last rounds great win.
First off was Shirley Munro and it’s fair to say she was giving a bit of length away to her opponent. All square after 7 but we were playing the back nine first and four big par 5 ’s in a row loomed. Shirley managed to halve the first one but firepower took over from there and once her opponent got ahead it was too much to pull back. A 5/4 loss but a great effort all the same from Shirley.
Next out was Lesley Meadowcroft and it’s fair to say she did a great job to just tee it up. A bad back makes winning pennant matches almost impossible and despite her caddie supplying her with enough voltaren to tranquillise a horse, she just couldn’t swing like we know she can and it was 2 down from 2. Super effort to get out there all the same Lesley.
Next out was Rosemary McQuade a match play specialist – I’ll come back to her later
Hayley Peters took to the tee next and she was up against a fellow Dallas Brooks finalist, so you just knew it would be a tough affair. Despite only being one down after 5 holes, Hayley’s body language wasn’t exactly upbeat. Husband and caddie Andrew has just done his back and it looked like she was going out in sympathy with him because she was as stiff as a board and fighting to find her normal flow (as us non-pennant players know all too well). Out of nowhere, the flow returned and the comeback began. 1 down at the turn and then a number of halved holes before Hayley pulled away for a 2/1 win. First win on the board for the team now down 2/1. I honestly can’t remember the last time Hayley lost. Super fighting win again.
The irrepressible Sue Semmens was out next and like Shirley Munro was up against a big hitting opponent who also made a seemingly endless amount of up and downs. Sue dropped the 9th to be one down at the turn and then lost the long par 5, 2nd hole to an up and down from nowhere and then followed up with another loss on the short par 3. Now Sue never goes down without a fight and this week was no different. Two wins from the next two holes got the match back to one before her opponent birdied the par 5 7th to Sue’s par and the match was dormie. A halved hole on the par 3 8th was enough for her opponent and despite playing pretty damn well, it was a 2/1 loss.
At 3/1 down it was starting to look like a pretty bleak score line but our two undefeated girls were the last two out.
Erica Kreymborg was almost disappointing. She only won 7/6 this week. She is literally just destroying opponents week in week out at the moment. Caddie Keith Mico reckons it’s down to his tutelage. “I’ve turned this girls game around,” he told me. I wonder if I sling him $20 if he could do the same for me!! Now I’m not sure how much credit Keith can take but Erica is in one of those ratified periods we all hope to have in golf when we can do no wrong. She hits it so long and straight that her opponents just try too hard to compete and capitulate. Long may it continue Erica. Well played.
Club champ Tiana Wanigasekera was out last and it was a tough match. I asked her how she went at the end of the day and she said that she “played pretty well. All square after 9 and then I had three birdies before winning 5/4”. Of course, you did Tiana. The beautiful thing is that it rolls off her tongue without the slightest bit of big noting. It’s just what you do when you’re that good.
Outstanding as always Tiana and the matches were now tied at 3/3.
Now back to Rosemary McQuade. All matches had been decided and she was up on the 18th green. It had been a seesawing battle all day with nothing more than one hole in it either way. The 9th and final hole for the ladies is a par 5 and Rosemary is on the dance floor for 2, putting for eagle and her opponent back in a fairway bunker for the same figure. Surely revenge for last years loss would be sweet.
The hole didn’t exactly play out like Mize/Norman but the end result was the same. Rosemary’s opponent makes an up and down from 80 out and in shock Rosemary 3 putts. Golf sucks sometimes!!!
Great effort by all the girls all the same. That’s one big win for the year and two losses by the narrowest of margins. Next week will be ours for sure.
Thanks again to all the supporters that returned out. It was great to see so many Spring Valley members cheering on all our pennant players.
