Spring Valley vs. The Grange
Published on 29th March 2023 in Latest News, Public Latest NewsLast weekend twenty four players from the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide visited Spring Valley to challenge us in the 50th anniversary of this competition between these two great clubs. Across the course of the weekend, the prize up for grabs is the McMillan Shield.
The competition takes the form of the Ryder Cup format with Foursomes match play on Friday, 4BBB match play on Saturday and Singles match play on Sunday. Consequently there are 12 points awarded for the Friday match play, 12 points for Saturday‘s match play and 24 points awarded for the singles games on Sunday.
The Foursomes match play on the Friday resulted in 10 points to Spring Valley and 2 points for Grange. The biggest winners were Gordon Stewart & Graham Biesse (8/7), Martin Rodgers & Martin Pearse (6/5) and Murray Billing & Erwin Michel also (6/5).
On Saturday it was the 4BBB stroke match play with Spring Valley scoring another 10 points to 2. Biggest winners on this day were Martin Pearse & John Harrington (7/5), Rob Loft & Marty Rodgers (5/4) and Steve Ellis & Steve Adams winning (5/3).
On Sunday we played singles stroke match play and with SVGC having 20 points to date out of a total of 48, we only needed 5 points to secure the McMillan shield. The Grange boys performed a little better winning 8 matches to our 16 matches. Biggest winners were John Scheffer (8/7), Larry Vun (8/6) and Murray Keen (6/4).
Overall: Spring Valley 36 to Grange 12
The best player of the competition as judged from points awarded to match play wins and margins was Steve Adams with 132.5 points and Murray Keen on 122.5 in second place. We had 2 new players in the team –Rob Loft and Geoff Neate – from that which visited the Grange in 2022. These two ‘newbies’ performed very well with Rob winning 2 of his 3 matches and Geoff winning all 3 of his matches.
Once again it was a great weekend golfwise, weatherwise and for cementing the great camaraderie between these two clubs.
I would like to thank my Vice Captain Marty Rodgers and his team in making this weekend a huge success. Also to our Clubhouse team, Admin, FnB & GSC, who worked tirelessly in the leadup to, and across the weekend, and the Course team for the excellent preparation – the Grange boys were very impressed.
