Round 6 Kooringal vs Spring Valley
Another trek for the team over to the western suburbs this week as we took on Kooringal at Medway. The team was met with a course with plenty of challenges, sloping fairways and fast greens with difficult to read borrow made for an interesting day. As the ladder was very tight with 4 teams vying for a top 2 finish this season, this was an important match. We needed to win and get as many matches as possible to secure our place and have a chance of getting into the finals. The team took on the challenge with gusto and finished the day with a brilliant 5/2 win, not to mention first place on the ladder.
Once again Heather Cadwallader lead the team out. She got off to a bit of a slow start dropping some early holes. Putting was proving difficult with 3 ring outs. After 8 holes Heather was 4 down but she battled on and got the match back to 3 down with 5 to play. Then like a real pro Heather kicked into high gear and won the next 5 straight to finish 2 up. What a great come back Heather.
Jan Pitcher’s caddie Rob Picher reported that ‘steady golf was the flavour of the day for Jan today’. Jan stayed out of trouble, not mean feat at Medway, and closed out the match with some great iron and wedges into the greens. She finished the day with a very strong 5/3 win.
Patty Carlson has earned her stripes this season with 3 straight wins and on Friday she went out to try and make it 4 in a row. John Carlson, Patty’s caddie, reported that Patty was a bit nervous and as a result her putter ‘misbehaved’ on the tricky greens. Patty gave it her all but unfortunately her winning streak was over when she finished down 4/2.
Lyn Treloar was 2 up after 3 holes and playing some very solid golf, 2 holes were then lost before she won 3 in a row to turn 3 up. An excellent putt of the 10th hole for par gave Lyn an unassailable lead. Her form continued, and she finished the match with a convincing 5/4 victory.
After an uncharacteristic wayward drive on the first hole, a long par 3, Julie Sheldrake managed to win the hole. She then proceeded to put her second shot on the 2nd hole into the dam, at this point Julie suddenly realised she had on the wrong glasses! With the correct glasses on Julie progressed well to turn 3 up. Julie found the water again on the second nine as she struggled to win a hole against a very steady opponent. The match was all square on the 18th, so on they went down the 19th. Julie stayed focused and managed to close out the match with a 10-foot putt on the 20th hole.
Marg Willcox once again played some very steady golf for the whole match. She kept the ball in play, only finding herself in one bunker all day. The putts were hard to come by on the tricky greens and Marg reported that she only made one good putt all day. Marg outclassed her higher handicapped opponent to steal the match with a convincing 7/5 victory.
Lesley Meadowcroft’s motto for the day was ‘keep the ball in play’, so she kept her driver in the bag and got out her trusty 3 wood. Lesley took the first hole and played steady golf for the first 9 holes to turn 2 up. She was 3 up after 10 holes but then her opponent fired up, gaining in confidence with every shot and every hole. Hole after hole Lesley’s opponent eroded her lead until the match finished on a difficult par 4 with Lesley down 3/2.
Well done team what a great effort. Next week the team are playing at Spring Valley against Patterson River, 8am off the 1st tee. This is another important match that we must win to secure a top 2 finish for the season. We would love to see some supporters on the day. Until next week.

Spring Valley V Peninsula Kingswood
Before the start of the season the team got together for some strategising and it was generally agreed that if we could get two wins for the season and hang on by our fingernails to a spot in division 2, it’d be a great effort by the team.
We entered the final round in 3rd position with 4 wins out of a possible 6, we had our tails up after beating ladder leaders Royal Melbourne last week and the girls were pumped to try and get one more victory for the year against our final opponent Peninsular Kingswood.
With Cec Pezet on work duty at Royal Melbourne, Shirley Munro led the team out at number 7 and came up against a very good player with a handicap significantly lower than Shirley. Now her opponent may have had a lower handicap but Shirley’s short game was on fire. Up and downs from around the green, hole after hole after hole took its toll on her opponent and to the thrill of all her team mates Shirley notched our first win for the day and her first win for the season. When I congratulated her on her performance the ever understated little champ replied “I’m quietly very choofed with that performance”. So were we. Husband and caddie Calum was equally impressed and said it was without doubt her best performance ever in a pennant match. Great stuff Shirley.
Next out was Rosemary McQuade and she came out of her corner swinging like a boxer tying to end the fight in the first round. We found out later that a disqualification 10 years ago at the same venue had been burning inside her ever since and at half way she was 3 up and playing sensationally. Unfortunately after a lengthy delay at the turn saw Rosemary run out of steam and her “cut man” caddie Jan Kreymborg couldn’t stop the bleeding – she even resorted to singing a rendition of “let it go” to try and get Rosemary back on track but to no no avail. She did fight it out all the way though going down 2/1 in a very tough match.
Captain Hayley Peters took a leap up the order this week and went out at number 5. She birdied the first for a win, lost the second and then won the next 9 straight for a 9 and 7 victory. I asked her fill in caddie for the day – Patty Carlson, how she played and she said just incredibly well. From tee to green she was outstanding and then some. When I later said to Hayley, “you must be thrilled with that” she did say, “I’d love to play like that every week, but you get a chance to play at Royal Melbourne and you have to walk off after 11 holes. It isn’t fair”. That’s what her opponent thought about being matched against Hayley – unfair.
Erica Kreymborg and caddie Keith Mico were next out and it was to prove another demolition job by Spring Valley. It was to end up being a 7/6 victory and Erica said it was the best she had ever played. She finished at 4 under the card, almost aced the 3rd hole she played and after 5 holes had only had 1 putt – not because her opponent wasn’t any good but because he chipping and iron play was exquisite. The hard to please, caddie Keith doesn’t give too much away but he sidled over to me after the match and said to me “stick this in your report – Erica was bloody brilliant today”. Here, here Keith.
Sue Semmens took the number 3 spot against a young and tough opponent and both players were finding their range difficult with the pace of the greens when putting and trying to hold their approach shots, but Sue was doing the better at half way, leading by 2. The back 9 was equally as tight with both players making some great up and downs. The defining moment in the match came very late and from an unexpected source.
Despite being 2 up with 3 to play Sue’s long hitting opponent had 3 long holes to finish with, and had out driven Sue by 50 metres on the par 5 16th. Sue pulled a 3 wood from the bag for her second shot and unfortunately smashed it directly at the Spring Valley crowd standing exactly 63 metres from the centre of the green. With players and caddies diving for cover, one man stood his ground and merely turned his back on the approaching ball. Keith Mico took the direct hit to the small of his back – on the full – saving Sue’s ball from the tee tree. He stoically then gave Sue her yardage and advice on how to play the shot and Sue subsequently won the hole and the match 3/2. Team team!!!
Tiana Wanigasekera went out at number 2 and came up against the world left handed champion for her age group – or so the story goes. Fair to say she was a quality player though and Sue and I kept remarking on how Tiana’s opponent could stop the ball so well on the lightning fast greens. Despite her best efforts, Tiana went down for the first time since 2016. A remarkable effort for someone so young and it took a real A Grader to do it. Sensational year again Tiana.
Our final player Helen Noble went out at number 1 and birdied the first for a win before her opponent seemingly birdied the rest of the course – well not quite but she was a plus golfer who really knew her stuff, played really well and it just happened that Helen had to take on the best of the best again. Helen has really borne the brunt of quality opposition for the year, she’s had some great victories along the way but this week the opponent was just too good.
So a 4/3 victory against an opponent who had 2 sites to pick players from and that made it 5 wins for the year. Incredibly, that left us in equal second position and only missing elevation to division 1 by percentage.
A fantastic effort by each and every one of the players this year. They really played as a team, they got behind each other, and they won matches I’m sure by sheer desperation not to let their mates down. Special mentions to Hayley and Alison Miller for their efforts with the team and also to the caddies and consistent group of supporters that came along week in and week out to support the troops.
If you see the players around the club in the coming weeks, make sure you pass on your congratulations to them as they represented us brilliantly for the whole pennant season.
Until next year.

Spring Valley V Chirnside Park
Wow! what a season…
We started very poorly but finished strongly to end up 6th in Division 4.
Lucas went out first today after begging for a week off!! He started slowly but found the form we know he is capable of and won 2/1.
Blake hit off next, his form has been red hot of late but he couldn’t get the putter working, losing on the last 1 down.
Smiling Simon belted his drive down our first hole, he qualified for the Club final yesterday and kept the train going, winning 2/1.
Matt Doran with dad Pete on the bag headed out hoping to get a win but the opposition proved to steady with Matt losing 5/4.
Scott Hooper also in the Club final went out looking very confident,(he always does!!!) Beating his opponent into submission 6/5.
Our recruit of the year!!Lee Collinson took up the No.2 spot and didn’t let us down winning 4/3.
Rob Grant took up the No.1 spot with a little apprehension but we ME on the bag turned only 1 down with hopes of an upset. The contest was tight but our opponent who couldn’t make it on TOUR managed to get a win over a good club Amateur!!!! 4/3.
I would like to thank everyone for their efforts and support this year. The commitment of Matt, Lucas, Simon, Wayne and Blake was terrific and what the team needs to succeed.
Work and family commitments make it hard for everyone to play every week, thanks to Craig Scott, Lee, Rob and Greg for playing when you could.
To Captain Bucky who adds the spark to our team, another good season and your direction and support was vital to all of us.
To our Caddies, Tony Sullivan, Cec Bailey, Keith Falconer, Richard Scott, Nick Stavrakis, Nick Venditti and of coarse Pete Doran, a BIG thank you for your commitment to travel and support the players every week.
Well Done!!!
