Medway vs Spring Valley
We headed out to Ranfurlie this week to take on Medway. After a delayed start due to very heavy fog the team got out onto the course and got to work. This was an important match for us to win in our quest to finish in the top 2 for the season. The team finished the day with a solid 5/2 win and equal 3rd position on the ladder. Well done team, what a great effort.
Heather Cadwallader had a real tussle on her hands on the first nine this week. Her long game was great but some poor putting on difficult to read greens saw her only turn 1 up. Things improved for Heather on the back nine and she raced away with the match finishing 4/2.
Jan Pitcher’s caddy Rob Picher reported that ‘Jan bolted out of the blocks, winning the 1st hole’. After pulling her tee shot left on the par 3 2nd hole, Jan recovered, nearly birdying the hole, with a sensational wedge shot into the green that finished hanging on the edge of the hole. Jan then kicked into over drive hitting some great irons and wedges into the greens finishing the match with a very impressive 9/7 win. Well done Jan what a great effort.
Pennant rooky Patty Carlson was back this week for her third match for the season. Patty said that she found the fast greens quite challenging, but caddy John Carlson was there to read the putts, so she just had to hit them in and hit them in she did. Patty finished the match with a strong 4/2 victory. Well done Patty, that’s now 3 for 3.
Lyn Treloar lost the 1st hole but rebounded quickly to win the 2nd and 4th holes and after a fine par on the tough 18th hole (her ninth hole for the day) she turned 2 up. Holes were then halved until the 7th which unfortunately Lyn lost with a 3 putt. The next hole was halved. Lyn was now 1 up with one to play. A great wood shot into the uphill green and Lyn’s opponent in a bunker saw her finish the match 2 up.
Julie Sheldrake and her opponent traded shots to square the first 3 holes. The greens were quick and difficult to read, and Julie’s caddie Marilyn Anderson reported that ‘it was going to take a bit of luck to decide who would win the match’. Julie under clubbed on a couple of shots leaving her short and letting a couple of holes slip away. Julie came back to square the second last hole but went down 2/1.
Margaret Willcox once again played some very consistent golf. With new clubs in hand she hit some great approach shots enabling her to turn 2 up. Her opponent fought back on the second nine and the match was all square after 12 holes. Margaret then forged ahead finishing with a strong 4/2 win.
Carol Angland and her opponent were well matched. They traded holes back and forth for the first five holes, but a few chips that just didn’t roll up onto the green enabled Carol’s opponent to sneak away and Carol turned 4 down. Carol bounced back on the second nine and grabbed back the next 3 holes. Her opponent then ‘found her feet’ on the putting greens sinking 3 good putts to take the next 3 holes. After a valiant fight Carol finished down 4/3.
Next week the team are off to take on Kooringal @ Medway. This is an important match if we are to maintain our chance at a top 2 finish for the season. Fingers crossed we bring home another win.

Women’s Pennant Report 22/04
Spring Valley V Royal Melbourne
So by pure chance you get to host your pennant round against the undefeated Royal Melbourne… I’m sorry did I say undefeated, not any more. Our mighty band of pennant women served it up to the ladder leaders and sent them packing with their first loss for the season in what can only be described as an epic performance.
As usual, sweet swinging Cecily Pezet led the team out and despite being out driven all day, caddie Steve Smythe said you’ve never seen anyone hit better iron shots than what Cec did. 3 up at the turn, Cec never gave her opponent a look in and finished the job 5/3. What a start.
Rosemary McQuade was next out. After winning A grade yesterday at the club with a score of 4 up Rosemary said she played almost as well today but her opponent was about 3 under off the stick when then the match finished earlier than expected. They’re not the ladder leaders for no reason and Rosie copped the brunt of their fire power today.
Our captain Hayley Peters went out at number 4 and played really well but without luck. Despite only being about 3 over for the day she watch her opponent just miss trouble all day and in what can only be described as quality golf, the match finished on 17 with a 2/1 loss.
Phelan Poorly’s girl Sue Semmens was next on the tee. 3 under off the stick after 7 holes and 7 up after 8 and I’m thinking I’ve got a gig as a looper as Sue’s caddie on the pro tour. The match was never in doubt and Sue closed it out 6 and 4 after a late charge by her opponent. I have to comment on 2 incredible highlights in the match. Sue almost started with an eagle, leaving her 3rd shot on the lip of the hole – talk about a great start. But the play of the day had to go to her opponent on 9. She hit her second shot so far left she must had been given line of sight relief from the vending machine at Magic Hands. She still managed an incredible par with the benefit of a free drop that amazed both Sue and her caddie but it was too little too late.
Next out was club champ and intrepid traveller Tiana. Young kids don’t get rusty, they play fearlessly and although caddie dad said she didn’t make any birdies, he did say she played really solidly all day hardly making a mistake. Tiana turned 3 up and went on to cruise to victory 4/3. Have I mentioned that Tiana is without a loss this year!! Super effort again Tiana.
Our last player out was Helen Noble and it’s fair to say her opponent was just too good. The match finished with her opponent 3 under the card and despite some great resistance along the way by Helen, the weight of birdies and pars and not one bad shot was just too much. That can happen when you play #1. Great effort all the same Helen.
So that makes 3 wins a piece. Oh that’s right I’ve missed our number 5 Erica Kreymborg and her caddie Keith Mico. With the results at 3 each a huge throng of supporters gathered around the final group left on the course. Despite losing 16 to a birdie Erica remained dormie 2 up and did enough up 17 to halve the hole with more pressure than any of us would ever want on a golf course. The 17th green resembled a rugby scrum as team mates, caddies and supporters rushed the green to congratulate our final victor of the day. When I asked Erica to describe how she won it she said “I’ve got no idea, I just hung in there and did it”. Keith did mention that superb putting may have helped.
All up a super effort by the team. Alison Miller could wipe the smile off her face after returning from holidays as team manager.
Fantastic to see the course looking so good, a heap off supporters out cheering the girls on and putting another win on the board.
A great day for the Spring Valley Golf Club.
Until next week.

Spring Valley V Patterson River
Spring Valley Pennant had a great day yesterday with wins in Men’s, Colt’s and Ladies!!!!!!
Blake led the men out at Sandhurst against Patto River, his opponent was Matt Edwards a former colt’s player for The Valley.
Blake showed his experience getting off to a quick lead, Tony his caddy said he hadn’t seen the course before so Blake started hitting it all over the place giving Tony a first hand look at everything!! Blake settled and got the job done 3/1.
Bucky back from a Golf and party trip to Vietnam took on a young guy who hit the ball Miles!!! When his opponent fatted a wedge into our 17th hole clipping a tree then bounced off the cart path up on to the green, we knew things weren’t going our way. Bucky finished 2 down.
Simon went out next with Rob on his bag, playing very well recently he never gave his opponent a sniff. Winning 3/2
Matt went out at 4 playing well from the start, will a big smile he finished the match 6/5.
Wayne has been playing great lately but couldn’t get going fighting out a 5/4 loss.
Great to have Lee back in the team and at No.2 showed his class winning 3/2.
Lucas back from watching the horses(his) run yesterday took on the No.1 spot against their International Pro. After hitting the flag on the par 3 third finishing 3 ft from the pin, his opponent dropped a 30 footer for birdie. Lucas obviously rattled from not being given the putt missed his putt to lose the hole!! He fought on but eventually went down 5/3.
The win puts us in equal 5th spot so a win next week is vital.
Thanks again to the caddies and nice to see Ken Buck supporting Dave and the Team

Colt’s Pennant Report 22/04
Spring Valley V Cheltenham
On a beautiful morning with a late start (8.15am) we journeyed out to Sandhurst with high hopes of securing a win and possibly put ourselves into finals contention. Our team this week is strengthened by the return of Aryan who competed in one of the 12 and under worldwide golfing comps and finished an amazing 7th place. Congratulations from all of us at the Valley and I believed you had a wonderful trip ( thank god for the bank of DAD !!!!!)
Our line up as follows:- Andrew playing No 1, Niv at No 2, Dennis at No 3 Aryan at No 4 and Sid playing No 5.
Cheltenham is sitting at No 3 on the ladder with Spring Valley sitting 5th with only ½ match separating the teams so an intense tussle is expected. Matches start as usual with mistakes by players usually due to nerves but we all settle down to the task, our boys all seem to get their noses in front and by the turn all are have their noses in front Andrew is 2 up Niv 3 up Dennis 4 up Aryan 1 up and Sid 2 up – Having played the back nine first I knew that the front nine holds more water hazards so fingers are crossed.
For those who know Sandhurst the 3rd hole is a par 3 with a rock wall on the left hand side and the rear, I am caddying for Dennis who is still sitting at 4 up, plays a safe shot just short of the green front right – smart play – opponent pulls it slightly wind catches it and is 300mm BEHIND the wall, ( that is 1 foot for the oldies !!!!) oh bad luck eh! long grass and all – opponent swings, grass goes everywhere, ball just catches the top and fall back down – Bad Ruck!!! – almighty swing in frustration, this time clears the fence, lands on the green rolls towards the hole and plop! In it goes, Bugger a par. Poor Dennis reeling at this point leaves his chip a little short and 2 putts back to 3 up.
One of the most amazing 3’s I’ve witnessed.
We all are getting nervous trying to close the matches out and Sid is the first with a 4 and 3 win so both he and his fledgling caddie ( Graham Ball !!!) both have smiles on their dials. Next I see Andrew strutting the fairway finished with a 5 and 4 win , another great effort, Dennis finally closes out with a 3 and 1 win, Aryan stumbles on the 18th and goes 1 down and all eyes turn to Niv.
The 8th – our 17th – sees Niv 1 up 2 to play but is a long par 3 into the wind, Opponent places his on the green but Niv pulls up short and usually a chip and a put is his bread and butter, but trick green sees a bogey and back to square. Last hole , long par 5 over water twice, after opponent tugs his left into hazard cool Niv plays up the centre and closes out 1 up – nerves of steel – fitting result.
Result Spring Valley 4 matches Cheltenham 1 – best win this season well done team and caddies
Final match will be played at Patterson river against Kew who are sitting 5th with the same number of games won but less matches won hopefully we can hold down 3rd spot for the season.
