This month’s coaching tips focuses on Putting.

Putts inside 6 feet are crucial to hole to get your rounds going. If you struggle with this distance, give ‘clock face’ drill a go.

Visualise a clock face around the hole, pick the point in which you want your ball to enter and then throughout your practice stroke, visualise that point.

This is a great way to commit to the entry point for your ball to enter the hole. This works for both ways of break and for straight putts.

This should have you sinking putts in no time!

Arguably one of the most important fundamentals in golf is alignment. Just like your car’s wheel alignment, it’s extremely important to constantly check your alignment before things start to break down. It’s not uncommon for a club golfer’s alignment to be 1-2 degrees out, this surprisingly results in aiming outside the hole on a 5-foot putt. Naturally using hand-eye co-ordination golfers will find a way to get their ball in the hole even if they are misaligned, however, compensation for poor alignment puts more pressure on timing and most leading to inconsistent results.

The good news is there are some easy solutions out there to get on top of your alignment. A putting mirror or alignment aid is a great investment and consistently used by many golf professionals. Another handy aid is to draw a line on your golf ball or utilise the ball’s logo to aim your golf ball on the line you want to start the putt.

Correcting your alignment will hopefully lead to more stroke consistency and more putts starting on the correct line.

This is a coach’s review on 18-28 handicapper’s Vs Tour professionals. The average tour professional will start to 3 putt from outside 30 feet and 18-28 handicapper will start to 3 putt between 15-25 feet. So this month’s coaches tip is about recognizing when you start to 3 putt and give you a skills test that you can do to help.

Here is a short skills test to measure how you are going in this score range (15ft-25ft). Rules of the test:

  • 1 ball – each hole is a par 2
  • Play 9 holes from random spots around the green and record your score
  • Par for the 9 holes would be 18 putts

Review your results once completed the test and look for any patterns on your missing putts.
