Leading Spring Valley out on a cloudy and cool morning was Heather Cadwallader. A great putt on the 1st hole to win, after a shaky chip, set the tone for the front nine. Another 3 long putts sunk on the front nine saw her turn 3up and without a loss. Another big putt on 10 salvaged a half and then a win on 12 took Heather to 4up. Unfortunately once she got to dormie, Heather struggled a little to close the match out but eventually steadied and was victorious winning 2/1. Congratulations Heather
Next to hit off was Sukin .Sukin didn’t start off very well, losing the first three holes in a row. ( probably due to nervousness). However, she was determined & went on to win the next two holes. The following holes see-sawed between Sukin and her opponent, and Sukin was one down on the front 9.
On the back 9 her opponent lost a bit of her rhythm & Sukin quickly pick up two holes to stay at 1 up for the first time. She was not very lucky & missed her putt by a thread on the 12th to square the game. She again won 13 & 14 & was 2 up.
The next 4 holes were a struggle for both players & Sukin again missed putts to square the match on the 18th. It was overall a great Match. Well done Sukin.
Playing at number 5 was Linda. Interesting conditions at Latrobe made for a challenging day. Early morning fog meant an extra club was required to find any distance, the fairways were ‘sticky’ and the greens slow. Linda made a good start winning 3 of the first 5 holes but it wasn’t until the 6th hole that she hit a ball she was truly happy with. Her Cheltenham opponent fought back through some good long putting and at the turn Linda was only 1 up, although she seemingly had her opponent’s measure. The sun finally shone through, and the golf improved. A fine recovery shot from the trees on the 14th led to a great scrambled hole win. Linda followed it up with pars at the 15th and 16th holes and the match was convincingly won 4 and 2. Congratulations Linda.
Next out on the course was Jan. Both players got off to a confident start, with pars on the first hole. They both got into trouble on the fairway on the second and squared the hole. Jan won the next 2 holes with some great fairway shots and a great putt on the 4th hole which landed next to the pin, whilst her opponent was in the bunker. The next 4 holes were squared. A great shot off the 9th tee and onto the green, and her opponent in an impossible position in the bunker, saw Jan 3 up at the turn. Jan won the 10th, and it was then shot for shot for the next 3 holes. On the 14th, Jan’s opponent was in trouble off the fairway, and Jan took advantage of the extra shots to win the hole and the match 5 and 4. Congratulations Jan.
Pam was next off and started with a nervous 3 putt on the first hole, going 1 down. The next 7 holes at Latrobe are all tree lined with subtle doglegs. Pam placed all her drives in positions on the fairways giving her a clear approach shot to each green. Her much longer hitting opponent was not as fortunate and Pam was able to dictate the outcome around the greens, picking up 5 wins and halving two holes, and getting to the Par 3 ninth tee at 4 up.
Pam matched her opponent shot for shot through the next 3 holes with both players putting very well. Pam made two good pars on holes 12 and 13 and finished the match off with a solid 6 and 5 win. Congratulations Pam.
Playing in her usual spot of number 2, Feirn came out hitting a straight shot up the fairway and went on to claim the first hole. The next hole saw her opponent get stuck in a bunker which Feirn took advantage of and won the 2nd hole. She confidently went on to win the next 2. Her opponent then settled down and Feirn lost the next hole which was her only losing hole for the day. The next 4 holes were squared and Feirn was 3 up after 9.
She confidently won the 10th, squared the 11th and won the 12th, then squared the 13th where she’d almost won the game however, her putt saw her ball balance on the edge of the hole and refused to drop. So onto the 14th where she won convincingly. Although her approaching shots to the greens were a little short all day, she played solid golf the whole day.
Great effort Feirn and a great win of 6/4. Congratulations Feirn.
Fiona must have been excited to play at Latrobe as she and our intrepid manger arrived around 7.30 for Fiona’s hit off time of 9.15. That’s dedication! Having stood around in the cold and the fog for that length of time it was a tough ask to hit a good first shot, or so one would think, Fiona’s opponent Vicki hit short and left, then Fiona put her 5 wood onto the green, after Vicki finally reached the green in 3, Fiona dropped her putt for birdie and walked off with a smile. The next 2 holes went her way as well, but on the fourth, a par 4, Vicki made par, and Fiona’s putt was a little long. The fifth, Fiona won with a good par, the 6th was squared in bogey. On 7, lying 3 up, Fiona had a great drive, out hitting Vicki by 30 metres and was playing into a hole with a water hazard along-side the green entry. Unfortunately, Fiona’s good shot went a little left and found the water causing her to lose this hole and drop to 2 up. Regaining her composure Fiona won the next hole but a wayward shot into out of bounds on 9th, the short par 3, saw her turn 2up.
With her caddie, off for a tea break, it was reported that Fiona hit a beautiful drive down the 10th, after a little mucking around from both players, the hole was halved. Fiona won the 11th easily, the 12 was halved in 7’s but the 13th was lost… a few little glitches. 2 up with 5 to play, no time to get worried about little glitches. Fiona won the 14th with a par and squared 15 with 5. Dormie, is not a bad place to be. The 16th at Latrobe is quite a daunting hole with a dog leg defended by a bunker and water. Not a place for the weak at heart. With sensible play, Fiona’s drive was wide right , her second shot stayed right, then with another bang on 5 wood she reached the green in regulation, Vicki needed to win the hole and was on the green for 4, both players two putted allowing Fiona to win the hole and the match 4/2. A well-played game, with good shots from all her clubs, including the putter, and some sensible decisions made to negotiate an unknown course. Congratulations Fiona.
Spring Valley won the match 6.5 – 0.5 and remains on top of the ladder.
Our final match is on Friday 21st April at Patterson River Golf Club
