Friday Team: vs Box Hill at Box Hill

Coming out of retirement to lead the team out was Marg. Filled with trepidation, she lost the first hole however, that was the one and only hole she lost. She drove well on the 2nd and 3rd and sunk a great putt on the 4th. The 6th hole saw Marg hit the green with her drive and we both started to feel better! She won the 7th and 8th and even though I dropped her buggy on the 9th, it didn’t distract her from her game. She was 3 up at the turn.
Marg squared the next 3 holes, her short game improving all the way, with accurate shots over bunkers and better putting.
By the 13th hole, her opponent was in trouble and Marg went on to win the next 2 holes, finishing off by sinking a long winning putt. A great win 5/4. Congratulations Marg.

Linda started the day with a long straight drive off the 1st tee and was confident of continuing her good form from last week.

Aghh, but trees, lots of trees came into play, particularly on the 2nd hole where 4 trees were hit in a row!! After a few more mishaps with trees through the next few holes she found herself 3 down after 6 holes. However, there was no giving up and Linda managed a couple of pars on the 7th and 8th and a halved hole on the 9th to be 1 down at the half way mark.

The back 9 holes saw some more consistent golf and Linda managed to claw back the match to square by the 14th hole.  Her opponent however, would just not hit any trees!!! and with home course advantage and some well-placed hits, her opponent managed a par on the 16thto be 1 up.

An uphill par 3 on the 17th and Linda’s opponent’s tee shot hit the far left side of the green and her ball just hung on. Linda was up next and managed to hit the green as well  landing 6 metres from the hole, but her opponent sunk a long putt for a birdie and Linda just couldn’t hole her putt, so the game over and a 2/1 win to Box Hill. Great effort Linda.

Sukin was the third player out today and had a bit of trouble with her tee shot on the first hole, but recovered nicely to end up square. Sukin and her playing partner traded up & downs on the next 5 holes before reaching the halfway point of the round. Sukin then took control on the 6th and 7th holes, finishing the front 9 with a score of 2 up.
However, on the back 9, she missed a putt of about 3 meters and lost the 10th and 12th holes, bringing the match back to square. From the 14th hole, Sukin and her opponent battled back and forth, ultimately resulting in a tie at the end of the round. Well done, Sukin!

Playing at number 4 today was Carol. Both Carol and her opponent were evenly matched on the fairway, with steady, straight hitting. Carol did however, have her measure around the greens with some great chipping and outstanding putting. Her opponent missed a couple of short putts and Carol found herself 3 up at the turn. Carol continued with her great form to take and 10 and 11, after her opponent hit into the bush on 11. Carol was now 5 up and looking good for an early finish however this was not to be. Her chipping onto the greens was just too short; her opponent capitalised on this opportunity and won the next 3 holes. Carol again steadied and won the 16th hole to take the match 3/2. A great win Carol. Congratulations

Pam Toole played at number 3 and started with a great drive and 2nd shot to win the first hole. Pam played steady golf and had managed to get to 3 up after 7 holes, notwithstanding struggling to find the pace of the undulating Box Hill greens. Pam lost hole 8 to quality golf and then an errant chip by her on the 9th ended in the hazard and she turned 1 up. After halving the 10th hole up the hill, Pam hit her strides with some wonderful tee shots and approaches close to flag, resulting in four consecutive pars which her Box Hill opponent could not match, winning 5 and 3 on the 14th.  Pam highlighted how special it was to have SV lady members out there encouraging the team as shown in the photograph below with players, caddies and supporters following Fern Thompson down the final 18th hole.

Playing at number 2 today, Feirn took a few holes to find her usual form. Fortunately, her opponent was struggling with the putter and it allowed Feirn to get back in the match. After some nice shots and a great par on the 8th, Feirn was 2 up at the turn. Her opponent was not deterred and the match see-sawed back and forth with some great hitting and some errors from both players. Fern’s great par at the 17th saw her take the lead but a par by her partner at the 18th by her saw the match halved. A fabulous contest – well done Feirn

Playing at No 1 was Fiona Watach. With her nerves now settled from last week, she started well, winning the first 3 holes. The next few holes Fiona’s drives found the trees but her opponent also found the bunkers. After nine holes Fiona was 3 up. Her driver started to behave and Fiona started hitting into the greens in regulation but was finding the slow greens hard to read.

She managed to get the putter going and won the match 4/2. Well done Fiona.

Spring Valley won the match 5 and 2

Our match next week, Friday 31st March is at Rossdale Golf Club
