Celebrating Our Legends: Peg McMahen

At Spring Valley Golf Club, we pride ourselves on not just our pristine course and top-notch facilities, but also on the incredible individuals who call our club home. Among these remarkable members stands Margaret “Peg” McMahen, a true legend whose loyalty and dedication have spanned an impressive 66 years.

Peg’s journey with Spring Valley Golf Club is a testament to her unwavering commitment and passion for the game. Over the years, she has forged lasting friendships with fellow members, enriching her experience and creating cherished memories that stand the test of time.

One such memory harks back to the days of Foundation Captain, Mr. Jack Leech, who would collect (or steal) couch grass from Peg’s family property and replant it at the golf course.

Reflecting on her youth, Peg also recalls with excitement her triumph at the Yarra Yarra Bowl, where she proudly represented Spring Valley and clinched victory in her division—a moment that undoubtedly holds a special place in her heart.

Throughout her tenure, Peg has witnessed the evolution of both the course and the Club House, embracing change and advocating for continual improvement. From the humble beginnings of the original clubhouse to the modern facilities we enjoy today, Peg’s presence has been a constant thread, weaving through the fabric of Spring Valley’s rich history.

Beyond her role as a dedicated member, Peg has actively contributed to the vitality of the club, volunteering for special events and competing in various tournaments, including the Interclub and Pennant teams. Her tenure as Treasurer on the Ladies Committee speaks volumes of her commitment to service, while her impressive list of accolades, including the Grandmothers’ Trophy and the Veterans Trophy, attests to her prowess on the golf course.

Though Peg modestly downplays her achievements, citing fortuitous circumstances for her Club Championship win in 1988, her consistent success in events such as the Mollie Thiele (1985), Ladies Foursomes with Jean Cassidy (1990) and the Spring Valley Shield (1987, 1990, 1991) underscores her skill and determination.

As we celebrate Peg’s remarkable 66-year membership, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude. Her unwavering dedication and indomitable spirit embody the essence of Spring Valley Golf Club, enriching our community and inspiring generations of members to come.
