Laurie Pay epitomises the essence of a quiet achiever. A loyal and staunch member whose dedication to our club knows no bounds. Despite his age of 96 years young, Laurie can be seen effortlessly cruising around the course on his mini-scooter, defying the limitations that age might impose.
His love affair with our club began on September 2, 1963, marking an impressive 60 years of continuous membership. Starting as a ‘B’ grade member—a common practice in those early days—he gradually ascended to ‘A’ Provisional status before attaining the coveted status of a Full Member. This journey, spanning seven years, stands in stark contrast to the streamlined process new members undertake today.
In 1976, Laurie achieved golfing glory by clinching the C Grade Club Championship – a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. Additionally, he has tasted success in numerous daily competitions and proudly boasts a victory in a monthly medal event.
During our club’s formative years, volunteers played a pivotal role in maintaining our course’s playing surface. Laurie was among those unsung heroes, contributing his efforts by planting couch sprigs on our fairways. His commitment to enhancing our course has endured over the decades, as he remains an integral part of our volunteer corps, tirelessly working to improve our grounds in exchange for nothing more than a sandwich and cup of tea. The invaluable assistance provided by Laurie and our volunteers has allowed our ground staff to tackle larger projects more efficiently.
A gentle soul and true embodiment of the spirit of our club, Laurie shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to grace our course with his presence, wielding his club with finesse and determination, much like the club’s founding members who laid its very foundations.
This Saturday 24th February, we celebrate Laurie’s remarkable contributions, let us not forget to extend our greetings, best wishes, and raise a glass in his honour. Cheers to Laurie Pay – an inspiration to us all.
