This Wednesday 21st February, we recognise one such exemplary member, Michael Burke, whose significant contributions span various areas within the club. His journey began on January 1, 1963, as a junior member and the son of member Jack Burke, marking a remarkable 61-year tenure.
Among his notable roles, Michael served as Captain from 2005 to 2008, following a decade-long tenure on the Board. An often-overlooked fact is his 20-year membership on the Match Committee and Score Card Checking sub-committee. During his captaincy, he was actively involved in the introduction of the club’s first computerised system, now known as the GSC, managing timesheets, scorecards, and competition results.
On the course, Michael has achieved remarkable success, claiming victories in various competitions including:
- B Grade Championship in 1972, 1981, and 1988
- Long Markers Championship in 2017
- JD Leech Trophy in 1974 and 1994
- Philip Courtney Trophy alongside friend Kel Rodgers in 1979, 1984, and 1989
- Spring Valley Cup with Kel Rodgers in 1987 and with Kim Harris in 2011
- Mid-week 4BBB Knockout twice, partnering with Ron Toe and Dave Darke
- Member of the Vincent Cup Team alongside Ron Toe, John O’Leary, and Colin Vance
- Mixed Foursome Handicap Trophy in 2006 with Lynne Moorcroft
- Two consecutive Monthly Medals in the 1970s
He has also been an avid supporter of our Pennant Teams. Undertaking roles as Team Manager in the Minor/Youth Pennant, and served as Assistant Manager for the Men’s Division One team. Michael played one game in the Minor Pennant Team securing victory against Peter Thompson’s brother in a memorable match.
Furthermore, Michael has been a steadfast supporter of the annual Spring Valley vs. Grange weekend, attending for 22 consecutive years and earning the esteemed status of Legend.
One of his proudest achievements is his involvement on the Project Committee for the design and construction of the new clubhouse, coinciding with his captaincy, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
Despite his diverse career with Spring Valley, Michael continues to play regularly, most recently representing the club in the “LIV it up” weekend hosted by Grange Golf Club.
