NEAR MISS: Call up hole on 14.
Published on 10th November 2023 in GSC/Pro, Guests News, Latest NewsIt seems that the call up hole on 14 is working well for the most part, however we had a worrying near miss last week. It has been reported that a group approaching the green called the group behind them up, per the protocol, however they elected to stand beside the pin while the group behind them hit.
This resulted in a member being hit on the shoulder, on the full by a tee shot from the group behind. Needless to say, this could have been a lot worse.
When the question was raised as to why they stood there, the response, quite amazingly was that stranding beside the pin was the safest spot to stand!
As a reminder, the detail of the call up hole is below – but two very important things need to be reiterated – please move to the back of the green when you have called a group up, and please only hit when it is safe to do so if you have been called up.
UPDATE: Please note that the call up hole trial is proving to be of benefit when it comes to pace of play, but there are some clarification points required:
- If the group behind you is on the 14th tee, BEFORE YOUR GROUP COMMENCES PUTTING, you are required to move to the safe zone, and call them up to play their tee shots.
- If you are in the group behind, DO NOT HIT UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED UP.
The 14th Hole is now a MANDATORY call up hole.
In the match committee’s efforts to speed up rounds for member’s here at Spring Valley, the decision to implement a call up hole on the 14th has been made.
Call up holes have been used effectively at golf clubs where applicable, to allow for groups to make some time on their rounds. The basis of a call up hole is when there is a long par three or short par four, where the whole hole is visible from the tee, players on the hole allow the following group to hit their tee shots when it is safe to do so, and the group following is ready to tee off. The group playing the hole stand in a designated safe area and let the group behind tee off. Once they have teed off the group in front can continue to finish off the hole, and continue play.
The 14th hole has been highlighted as issue for groups banking up so the Match Committee has elected to implement this as a three month trial commencing on Saturday June 3rd.
The safe area will be set to the back of the green. (at the end of the red arrow to the right) From this point you shall be able to see the group behind teeing off and then once they have finished you will be able to finish the hole.
This trial period will commence on Saturday 3rd of June 2023.
