SEASON WRAPPED UP FOR THE SCORPIONS
Published on 7th November 2022 in GSC/Pro, Latest News, Public Latest NewsAll roads led to the National Long Island course for Spring Valley’s junior pennant team, with plenty to play for on the day. The spectacular run of weather continued for our junior pennant competition, with this being the best day by far. Six of Spring Valley’s finest, set out to capitalize on this beautiful weather and win their match to take out the regional flag.
Anyone who has played the National Long Island knows that it is not the easiest of courses , with guarded green complexes and thick rough lining the fairways, this was a real test for how good the kids golf game is. The matches were all played to high standard and all a tight contest. Our first three matches didn’t go our way, with the Scorpions being defeated by some quality players from The National. With the chances of winning the game gone the best we could do was a halved match 3 games to 3. In the next three spots we had our youngest and most inexperienced golfers, but this did not show one bit.
Nigel Li and Oliver Battistella were able to play brilliantly and wrap there games up by the 15th hole, leaving 12 year old Matilda Loft to tough out the last match. It wasn’t looking good for Matilda, as she was 4 down with 6 holes to play. But in true Spring Valley Scorpion fighting style, with dad Rob on the bag, Matilda proceeded to win hole after hole after hole going from 4 down to 1 up by the 18th hole. With a massive crowd converging on the 18th, there was no sign of nerves from Matilda, as she proceeded smoke a 200 meter drive, followed by a beautiful 8 iron to 10 foot and 2 putts to seal the victory. Normally pennant isn’t about individual, but everyone there will agree that this effort from Matilda was well worth mentioning.
There were many stories throughout the year, like Matilda’s that have made myself, parents and the Club proud and regardless of the result this is what we will take from the year. From a manager perspective I am really happy with the skills and the attitude of the kids, Spring Valley future is in safe hands. Thankyou to the parents for taking the kids to each match and being so easy to work with and the support and efforts with the Junior Golfers.
The Spring Valley Scorpions finished second on the ladder by 0.5 of a match. Well done Scorpions.
