The president’s trophy consists of two qualifying rounds with the best four stableford scores going in to handicap match play.

On Thursday 1 August, the final was played between Shirley Munro off 11 and Dot George off 23.

Shirley got away with a good start winning the first two holes and halving the third to be 2 up.

On the fourth, both girls found fairway bunkers before being on the green. Dot sank a great putt to win the hole. The next hole Dot used her shot to take the hole and bring the match back to square.

The sixth was the hole of the day for Shirley, she hit a great drive over the bunkers and then a super shot into the green 1m from the hole the resulting birdie put her back in the lead.

On the seventh Dot’s shot gave her the hole match square.

Dot then parred the 8thbut for a win but lost the 9thto have the match turn all square.

The 19thwas squared in 4’s, Dot conceded the 10thafter bunker trouble, 11 and 12 were straight forward squares but then Shirley conceded 13thmatch back to square.

Dot won the 15thwith her shot, on 16 Shirley thought she had blown her chances when she put her third through the green, but then a great lob wedge flop put her to gimme distance and took the hole.

With the match square Shirley played 17 perfectly good drive, solid second and third into the green. Dot mishit her third into the fairway bunker reached the green in 5, Shirley 2 putted to take the hole and the lead dormie 1.

The last hole, Dot had a shot but needed to win the hole if the match was to proceed. Both girls hit good drives but both needed to lay up, Shirley’s was successful but unfortunately for Dot her layup was a bit strong and fell into the bunker. Shirley’s short game was on song most of the round and once again she was well on for 3. Dot played a reasonable bunker shot but went through the green. A good shot back had her in for 6 nett 5. Shirley’s first putt went passed the hole she needed a 1.5m putt to halve the hole and win the match.
