Meet A Member Profile- Barry Gust

Published on 10th July 2018 in Guests News

Barry Gust is a left hander, but we will forgive him for that.

In other fields he had an outstanding career spanning 38 years with the State Bank of Victoria, serving in both branches and administration.

In retirement he continues to serve; although the bank regretfully is no longer, Barry has, for more than 10 years been President of the Retired State Bank Officers’ Club. Under his leadership the Club is flourishing, attending to members’ needs and providing them with social activities.

The picture below, shows Barry ensuring that members were well fed at one of the Club barbeques.

In earlier days Barry was a regular in athletic events and is now an enthusiastic walker undertaking walks in many countries around the world.

His athletic pursuits date back to his teenage years at the Yallourn Club and then in the late 1950s when he joined Collingwood Harriers Athletics Club where he competed with distinction until 1968.

He contributed to an A grade Track Premiership team for Collingwood, was a member of the Victorian team at National Championships and member of the Victorian Cross-Country team. Over his career he held seven Club records in Steeplechase as well as three and six mile events. And as you’d expect, Barry held the committee position of Club Record’s Officer for five years.

Barry can be spotted kneeling in the front row, far left.

Barry is a fine golfer, and rarely dissuaded by poor weather. You can see him playing most Wednesday and Saturday mornings come rain or shine. This resolve has been reflected in his consistent competition results.

Always fun company – if you don’t know him, introduce yourself next time you see Barry at the club.
